Who is Emma Raducanu? All about the tennis star who defeated Serena Williams on the court

Emma Raducanu has had an impressive few years. The 19-year-old British tennis star made history like it was the easiest thing in the world. The athlete did it for the British by winning the 2021 US Open and then a few months later winning the BBC’s 2021 Sports Personality of the Year, the first woman to do so since Zara Tindall in 2006. Say that she deserves it is an understatement.

And her star power on the court shows no signs of stopping, given that she just beat tennis icon Serena Williams, arguably the greatest athlete of all time, in the first round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Raducanu praised the soon-to-retire Williams as “inspirational” in a gushing tribute after her win. “We all have to honor Serena and her amazing career,” she told the crowd. “I am so grateful for the experience of being able to play her and for our careers to cross paths. Everything she has achieved is so inspiring, and it was a real honor to share the court with her.

She also shared an Instagram picture of herself shaking Serena’s hand with the caption, “Grateful to have shared courtship with you Serena.”

So how did this relative newcomer manage to achieve such dizzying heights in tennis stardom? Here’s everything you need to know about Emma Raducanu.

Born in Canada, she and her family moved to London when she was two years old. Since then, she has performed very well on and off the tennis court. Aged just 18, she started Wimbledon ranked 338th in the world before wowing spectators by becoming the youngest Briton to advance to the knockout stages during the competition’s open era.

While she subsequently withdrew from the fourth round of Wimbledon, citing dizziness and difficulty breathing, she made an incredible comeback by winning the 2021 US Open.
