USC’s No.13 men’s tennis wins third straight win over No.27 UCLA

LOS ANGELES – USC’s No. 13 men’s tennis team won the senior day by beating rivals UCLA 6-1 today at Marks Stadium. The two seniors of USC – Daniel Cukierman and Riley smith – helped prepare for the Trojans’ comeback effort after the Bruins scored the double. Cukierman claimed the first singles victory of the day, followed by straight set wins of Lodewijk Weststrate and Smith to set up the clincher of Bradley frye. USC goes 17-6 overall and 5-2 in the Pac-12 game with the Trojans’ third consecutive win of the year over UCLA.

The doubles point fell to first place after UCLA claimed a victory on court three and USC retaliated with a victory on court two of all time undefeated Stefan Dostanic and Bradley frye. With all eyes on court one, the Trojans lost match point to a canceled line call, and the game would stretch to a decisive tiebreaker. There, the Baird / Nanda Bruins took the win for a 7-6 (4) decision over USC’s 35. Daniel Cukierman and Riley smith to make it a 1-0 lead at UCLA in singles.

The Trojans would bounce back by snagging the first sets on the line and continuing from there. At the first location, # 42 Daniel Cukierman hit the gas and accelerated out of reach of # 62 Govind Nanda for a 6-2, 6-0 win that tied things 1-1. On court six, Lodewijk Weststrate Quickly did Roscoe Bellamy’s job with a 6-2, 6-3 decision that propelled the Trojans into the lead, and USC would leave no doubt the rest of the way. On court two, # 29 Riley smith roared for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No.109 Drew Baird in revenge for the doubles loss on field one. With a 3-1 lead in place, Bradley frye jumped at the chance to hang out with the clincher. He would claim a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ben Goldberg on court four to take a 4-1 lead on the board for the Trojans.

The game continued and USC would collect two more sweeps to end the day. Jake sands clinched a 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory over short five over Mathew Tsolakyan to bring the score to 5-1, then # 84 Stefan Dostanic completed the day’s action with a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Sam Feit to score a 6-1 victory for the Trojans.

Next up for the Trojans is a trip to San Diego for the Pac-12 tournament, which runs April 23-26 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
