It returned as a full medalist sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics and has been played at every edition of the Games since then. Monica Pug won gold in women’s singles at the Rio 2016 Games, while Briton Andy Murray won gold in men’s singles in 2016.

Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won the women’s doubles while Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Rafael Nadal won the men’s doubles and Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock won the mixed doubles.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were originally scheduled to take place between July 24 and August 9, 2020, but the Games have been postponed from July 23 to August 8, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the first time that the Summer Olympics have been postponed rather than canceled.
