Tennis star jokes about Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo’s nickname under threat

Tennis star Casper Ruud has joked that Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo’s nickname is under threat.

Ruud made history earlier this week by becoming the first Norwegian to reach the final of a Masters tennis tournament. He eventually lost to Carlos Alcaraz in Miami, but his outstanding performance propelled him to seventh place in the world tennis rankings.

After reaching the showpiece event, Ruud joked that he should get in touch with United’s Portuguese ace. He explained: “It’s always good to have a new career ranking.

“So it will be seven o’clock tomorrow. I might have to call Ronaldo because ‘CR7’ is in danger now. I don’t know if we have to negotiate and see who can actually have that number.”

The CR7 moniker has long been associated with Ronaldo having worn the number seven shirt at Real Madrid and Juventus as well as United. However, Ronaldo will likely quash any talk about sharing his nickname once he hears who’s backing the Norwegian. Ruud continued: “I don’t completely follow every football game, to be honest.

“I’m not a die-hard soccer or football fan. But my team is Liverpool because when I was 10 I went to Liverpool to play a junior tournament with a Norwegian who arranged it to play against d other British grass-court players.

“It was my first time playing on grass. Then he took us to the stadium.

“I bought Fernando Torres’ shirt when he was playing for the team many years ago now. Since then it’s been natural for me to support them.”
