Tennis News ‘Second Service’: Roger Federer ‘not ready’ for Basel farewell as Tsitsipas’ mother says only Kyrgios confuses Stefanos

A look back at big tennis news in our exclusive ‘Second Service’… Roger Federer isn’t ready for another goodbye in his hometown of Basel as Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mother says Nick Kyrgios confuses her son, more more…

To begin this roundup of tennis news, Roger Federer respectfully declined the possibility of another send-off ceremony at his Swiss Indoors home tournament in Basel this month.

The 20-time Slam champion was due to appear at ATP 250 from October 24 before his decision to retire from the sport last month. Now, after all the emotion and fanfare in and around the Laver Cup in London, Federer thinks it’s too early for another ceremony.

“I thank the Swiss Indoors for agreeing to welcome me to Basel this year,” he said. “But I’ve tried to absorb everything that’s happened recently. Celebrating at home in Basel will have a special meaning and will come too soon after London.

In other tennis news, Stefanos Tsitsipas is not in his right mind against Nick Kyrgios according to his mother Julia Sergeyevna Apostoli.

The rivalry between the two came to a head in the third round of Wimbledon this year. In a very charged atmosphere under the roof of Court One, Tsitsipas and Kyrgios fought over four sets which saw a number of controversial moments for the referee.

“The only person who confuses Stefanos is Nick Kyrgios,” Apostoli said according to the Greek City Times. “He is the only one to bring it out of himself”,

“During the Wimbledon match, Kyrgios decided to ignore the general rules of the sport. The match became very strange and nervous because he was playing ‘dirty’ tennis.

Additionally, Andy Murray has now reached 25 wins in 2022, matching his win tally for his 2017 season just before his career disrupted hip injuries.

The former world number one defeated world number 61 Pedro Cachin 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 Gijon Open. Murray can now boast a 25-16 win-loss record this season on the ATP Tour.

Murray was 25-10 in 2017 until Wimbledon that year when his season was abruptly cut short due to injury. He then rose from No. 1 to No. 156 in the ATP rankings over the next 11 months away from competition.
