Kazakh tennis star Alexander Bublik was showered with boos after missing an exhibition in the final of the Moselle Open in France on Sunday.

The world No. 44, who was leading by a set and a break against Italian opponent Lorenzo Sonego, gave his rival a second break after attempting the bizarre move in the second set of the ATP 250 contest final .

After Sonego somehow delivered a well-directed first serve, Bublik had the opportunity to comfortably crush an easy winner and save a break point.

But the 25-year-old inexplicably spun his racquet, grabbed the frame and played a shot with the handle.

Sonego eventually won the point to take a 4-1 lead in the set.

“What is he thinking? shouted the commentator.

“No wonder the boos are coming. This is the final of an ATP 250 event. He has one breakdown, now he has two. It unravels quickly. Scandalous. What is happening here? I can’t believe he did that.

The Metz crowd were unimpressed, booing Bublik as he burst out laughing as he wiped away at the change of sides.

Sonego won the match 7-6 6-2, claiming the third ATP Tour title of his career and slipping into the top 50 of the standings.

“I improved my tennis every day and I’m really happy with this match and this tournament,” the 27-year-old said after the match.

“It’s really difficult to play against Alexander, because he’s an incredible player with an incredible serve, good talent, and it’s always difficult to play him.”

“It’s an emotional moment for me, because I’ve had a difficult year. Now I’m going to enjoy it.

Bublik won his maiden Open Sud de France title in Montpellier earlier this year, beating former world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the final.

He has an unfortunate reputation for flopping at Grand Slams, never qualifying beyond the third round at a major tournament.

However, Bublik reached the doubles semi-finals of the 2020 Australian Open alongside compatriot Mikhail Kukushkin.
