Simona Halep says she will be out of action for three weeks

Simona Halep withdrew from the Miami Open ahead of her second-round match due to a leg injury.

Halep, who reached the semi-finals in Indian Wells last week and was byeed in the first round in Miami, said she felt severe pain in her left leg while training for her match with Australian wild card Daria Saville.

“I had been struggling with my thigh since my semi-final in Indian Wells and was hoping it would get better, but I had an MRI last night and sadly it showed a tear,” wrote two-time champion Halep. of the Grand Slam, on Twitter.

“My body needs time to heal and as a result I will be out of competition for three weeks. This means I had to make the very difficult decision to withdraw from Miami, Charleston and the Fed Cup.”

In Indian Wells, Halep recorded wins over Coco Gauff, Sorana Cirstea and Petra Martic before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek in her first WTA 1000 semi-final since chasing the title in Rome in 2020.

Despite the 30-year-old’s injury setback, Halep said she was encouraged by her start to the year, which included reaching the last 16 at the Australian Open, and hoped to be ready for the clay.

“Although this is really disappointing news to share, I still have the confidence of my excellent start to the year and I am motivated to do everything to be ready for the clay court season.”
