For starters, Alexander Zverev will not feature in the Davis Cup group stage as planned after picking up another injury ahead of the competition in Hamburg.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be part of this team this week,” Zverev told reporters at a press conference in Hamburg. “I have a new problem, bone edema which is causing me a lot of pain. I don’t know if it happened yesterday or not but yesterday at training with Oscar [Otte] I got to a point where I couldn’t run or walk anymore.

“It’s not a matter of days. It will probably be a matter of weeks, probably even months,” he admitted. “Obviously it was a huge goal for me to play here because it’s my hometown, I know the stadium very well.

Elsewhere, Emma Raducanu won her first match since losing in the first round at the US Open last month.

The 19-year-old beat 22-year-old world number 89 Dayana Yastremska 6-2, 5-3 ret. as the young Ukrainian retired late due to a wrist injury when they met in the first round of the Slovenia Open.

Falling to 83rd place in the WTA rankings, Raducanu is looking to move up the women’s ladder throughout the 2022 season and is enjoying her time in Portoroz.
