Naomi Osaka loses in the first round to Amanda Anisimova at Roland-Garros, results, scores

Naomi Osaka was knocked out of the French Open in the first round on Monday, 12 months after leaving the tournament in controversial fashion.

The error-ridden Japanese star was beaten 7-5, 6-4 by Amanda Anisimova of the United States, serving eight double faults and committing 29 unforced errors.

Former world number one and four-time big winner Osaka pulled out of Roland Garros in 2021 when she refused to honor mandatory media commitments before revealing she was suffering from depression.

Osaka was fined and threatened with a Grand Slam ban for her opposition to press conferences which she likened to “kicking people when they’re down”.

“It’s hard to see Naomi Osaka in the first round, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy,” said Anisimova, the 27th seed.

“I knew I had to play my best tennis and the conditions weren’t easy.”

On a cold and wet day on the Suzanne Lenglen court, there were four service interruptions in the first six games.

Osaka, who never made it past the third round in Paris, briefly led 5-4 but was broken for the third time in Game 11 following her fourth double fault.

Anisimova, the 27th seed who ended Osaka’s Australian Open title defense in January, served it to love as the Japanese star had to regret his 17 unforced errors in the first game.

Osaka, with her left ankle taped to protect an injury that forced her to sit out the Italian Open, was broken again in the seventh game of the second set.

Anisimova, who reached the semi-finals in 2019, claimed victory on a third match point with a sharp forehand down the line.

Currently ranked 38th in the world, Osaka’s ranking won’t drop much further given she wasn’t defending points from last year’s tournament.
