LONDON: Germany Tajana Maria chased his dream Wimbledon run as she battled from one set to defeat the former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 on Sunday and reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time.
It was the biggest victory for the mother-of-two who returned from maternity leave just under a year ago and she will face Britain’s Heather Watson or fellow German Jule Niemeier in the last eight.
Ostapenko, 25, who reached the grass-court Grand Slam semi-finals a year after winning her first major title at Roland Garros in 2017, got off to a shaky start as she gave up serve early to trail 1-3.
But the Latvian immediately regained his composure to level the scores before switching gears to go ahead 6-5 and won the first set after world number 103 Maria made unforced errors in crucial spots .
Maria, 34, the oldest player remaining in the women’s draw, impressed with her stunning straight-sets win over the fifth seed. Maria Sakkari in the last round and she fought back 1-4 in the next set before forcing a decider.
After saving two match points in the second set at 4-5 and with the crowd firmly behind her, Maria capitalized on an error by 12th seed Ostapenko to come back 6-5 in a see-saw third set before to seal the match on serve.
