How the tennis star’s fortune grew from £44 in the bank to £12m

Emma Raducanu’s rise to fame is nothing short of a fairy tale story.

Her historic win at the US Open in September 2021 made her a household name in the sport as a whole, not just tennis.

As well as her meteoric rise from 338th to 22nd in the world rankings in just three months, the Briton’s change in financial situation also reflects how quickly her career has soared.

Raducanu had just £44 in his company account before his triumph at Flushing Meadows saw his fortune soar to £12million, according to the Daily mail.

The UK number one is the sole director of her company Harbor 6 limited, which was set up in February 2020. Her first set of accounts were filed last week and revealed finances through February 2021.

Raducanu had total assets of £55,682, before owing creditors £54,883. A further £750 was subtracted from the remaining amount as a “provision for liabilities”, leaving the company with just £44 in net assets after outgoing payments.

Today, she is one of the most marketable young athletes in the world, having signed lucrative sponsorship deals with a number of high-end brands.

The teenage tennis sensation made her WTA main tour debut at the Nottingham Open in June 2021, which paved the way for a wildcard entry to Wimbledon later that month.

After reaching the fourth round and receiving criticism for dropping out due to breathing difficulties, Raducanu silenced his doubters with his astonishing unbeaten run at the US Open.

Before making the main Flushing Meadows roster, the teenager had to play three qualifying matches. She then stormed into the main draw and became the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title.

Raducanu’s win saw him pocket a total of £1.8million in prize money, but the high profile business deals that followed are responsible for the majority of his newfound fortune.

In addition to becoming the new British number one and rising to 12th place in the world rankings, Raducanu has become the ambassador of many brands.

As well as being a Nike and Wilson sponsored athlete, the 19-year-old currently has partnerships with Tiffany & Co, Dior, Evian and British Airways.

A recent deal with mobile giant Vodafone is said to be worth £3m a year, and its latest deal with Porsche will also add a significant amount of money to the bank.

The tennis commitment called into question

Since signing deals with these high-end companies, Raducanu’s commitment to tennis has been called into question. The world number 12 has struggled to maintain her form at the US Open in the new season and some have criticized that her vision has been clouded by her new business ventures.

Raducanu has responded to “unfair” comments regarding his sponsorship deals and stressed that his main focus is always on the pitch.

“Maybe you just saw on the news or on social media that I’m signing this or that deal and I feel like it’s pretty misleading because I’m working five, six hours a day [of training]I’m at the club 12 hours a day,” she said.

“I feel like my days [with sponsors] are quite limited. I don’t have crazy days. I do three, four days per term, so it’s really not that much.
