Carlos Alcaraz thrashed his idol Rafael Nadal 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open on Friday.

“It means a lot to me,” said Alcaraz, 19, who becomes the youngest person to beat Nadal on clay.

“All the hard work I do every day is paying off today. Beating Rafa, beating the best player in history on clay means a lot to me.”

Alcaraz had twice faced fellow 35-year-old Spaniard Nadal and lost each time.

His reward is a semi-final with world number one Novak Djokovic, who beat Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 6-4.

Nadal, a five-time Madrid winner, lost serve three times in the opening set, winning in a turbulent game that had to be stopped to help a spectator in the stands.

Alcaraz had to overcome a sprained right ankle during the game. In the second set, Alcaraz saved three break points but suffered a fall. He struggled with his right ankle as Nadal won five straight to take the set.

Alcaraz recovered early in the third set, breaking Nadal in the fourth game and then holding serve the rest of the way to win.
