Women’s tennis victory – La Merciade
On April 16, the Mercyhurst women’s tennis team faced the University of Edinburgh for the fifth game of the season of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The game began at 3 p.m. at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pa., On one of their indoor courts.
Originally slated to be played at McDowell High School, the game has been moved due to the weather.
Scoring another victory for their PSAC season, the Mercyhurst Lakers took a 5-2 victory over the Edinburgh University Fighting Scots.
The Lakers quickly started the first set with a sweep of the doubles play. First-year Valentine Budin and second-year Janiece Theodora took the first win with a 6-1 victory over Edinboro second-year Lauren Chiacchia and freshman Emily Cevera at number three.
“Janice and I stayed very focused on our goal while having fun and playing the tennis we love,” Budin said.
Mercyhurst junior Naomi Jahr and sophomore Alana Lewis both earned a double run with a 6-4 decision over Marina Zottele and Ana Nadai of the Fighting Scots.
Senior Athina Tsagkaraki and senior Ivana Plecevic completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory over Kaede Tada Torye Calleja of Edinboro.
Tsagkaraki turned the Lakers’ score 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 singles number two win over Calleja. Additionally, Budin earned his eighth straight singles victory with a score of 6-1, 6-1 at number three against Zottele.
Budin spoke about his enthusiasm for the game and how it went, saying there were good serves and volleys throughout the game.
“I had to keep the ball with good intensity and I tried not to get distracted by my opponent’s play,” said Budin.
Lewis scored a 6-1, 6-1 win at number four over Nadai, bringing his personal winning streak to nine games. Theodora earned her final victory of the night for the Lakers 6-0, 6-1 at number five against Cevera.
The Mercyhurst women’s tennis team currently holds the third and final playoff standings in the PSAC West Division. The Laker’s current overall score is 6-6 with a conference score of 3-2. The team also has a three-game winning streak.
The Lakers made their last PSAC game of the season yesterday when they traveled to Clarion, Pa. To face the University of Clarion Golden Eagles. The game was played at the Campbell Courts at 4 p.m.
